so sometime last night my computer shut itself off. The logical reason for this would be a power failure or somesuch. However, my alarm clock is fine, and it has no battery backup. So, confusion abounds. The computer is on a surge protector, so I dunno. Everything seems to be ok tho, so that's good.

Yeah...I have two desktops...one of them on a UPS, the other not. The one that's not keeps rebooting (same issue as yours). So I finally gave up and don't leave it on when I'm away from it for more than a few hours.
