Katieum Update
Found out that she wasn't just transferred to Presbyterian Hospital, she was Life Flighted. (sp?)
She's got pneumonia, and sepsis, and is in toxic shock.
her kidneys failed overnight. she's on a ventilator. She's heavily sedated. Her BP is way low. Overnight she was on three bp meds to try and control it. Her blood oxygen levels are all over the place. As is her temp.
At 2pm her temp was 105 F and she was packed in ice to bring it down. Her blood O2 levels were good then, and her BP was stable but very low. She'd been weaned off of two of the bp meds.
at 4:30 her temp was normal, but her blood oxygen was unstable. They were giving her nitrous oxide to bring that up.
As of now, the last update for the night, she's stable. Nothing else has changed, but her temp is stable, her bp is stable, and her blood oxygen is stable. She wasn't on the nitrous oxide for very long. One of the drs (in particular, not just any one) was with her from the moment she came in the door last night until about 7pm this evening when he felt she was stable enough and comfortable enough for him to go home for a bit.
She's had a 4/5 dr/nurse ratio, but i forget which way it is. either way, those are people specifically for her.
They are at this time very optimistic. Whether it's that she'll recover fully or simply live I don't know and frankly don't care right now. As long as it's that she'll at least live I'll be happy.
The pneumonia is a mild form, not the bad one like they'd originally thought. But the sepsis is really bad, as is of course the toxic shock. And the kidney failure, the ventilator, etc.
But right now they're very optimistic, and so am I. Thank you for your thoughts/prayers/vibes/candles/whatever. Please keep doing it.
We'll hear more first thing in the morning.
The drs did say that had been 60 years old and come in in that condition last night she would have been dead by morning. So she's doing well. Being an otherwise healthy 24 year old will do that for ya I guess. She's also at the best hospital in the city, and one of the best in the country. (Presbyterian Hospital of Pittsburgh I think is the proper name.)
I'm likely to want to do something for her and her family when all of this settles down a bit, particularly to defray what must be astronomical medical bills already -- she's got no insurance. That will wait, right now, I just want my friend back.
